What a year! I've gone from trying to break into publishing to having two stories in the queue with a publisher to be released this year. I wanted to share my experience and some of my favorite books with you.
My story:
It's not lost on me that both of these stories have entirely LGBTQ+ stories. One of my stories is a fantastic story of romance and revolution with queer and trans leads to a paranormal Halloween story about a gay will they/won't they throuple.
When I first started writing, I'd heard from a lot of people that LGBTQ+ stories don't sell. I was encouraged to move my stories to more heteronormative stances. I'm sure a lot of authors who are members of marginalized communities may relate to the feedback "___ doesn't sell". How do you handle it?
Embracing my sexuality and my community has only enhanced my writing and uplifted its themes and arcs. What has your experience been when writing characters from communities you belong to?
Favorite Books:
Shadowhunters Series by Cassandra Clare. Alec was the first character that I ever related to. His impact on my life cannot be overstated.
Carry on by Rainbow Rowell. I love SnowBaz.
Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
Check Please by Ngozi Ukazu
The House by the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera
In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan. READ THIS.
Running with Lions by Julian Winters
What If It's Us by Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli
